The iPhone 13 Pro cameras aren’t a revolution over those in the iPhone 12, but there are some neat tweaks that make a pro photographer like me pretty excited. Here’s what’s got me popping. 

I’ve used the iPhone 12 Pro Max since it launched, and I’m frequently blown away by the shots I can achieve with it. That’s especially true when I’m using ProRaw and editing my shots in apps like Adobe Lightroom. So I’m interested to hear that the main camera has an even larger image sensor with an f1.5 aperture. That’s going to allow it to capture a lot more light. And more light means better photos.

The telephoto zoom has been bumped from 2.5x to 3x, which is welcome too. I use the telephoto zoom a LOT on my phone to find more interesting compositions in the landscape that might be lost if I just shot all the time with the wide-angle lens. Still, I’d have liked to have seen an even bigger zoom boost to put it closer to the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s amazing 10x optical zoom. 

Super-wide and macro

Then there’s the super-wide-angle lens, which has a much wider aperture and improved night mode for better shots in the dark. That’s great, because the 12 Pro Max’s super-wide shots weren’t always that good at night. The super-wide also has a new macro function, letting you capture shots of objects as close as 2 centimeters (a little more than three quarters of an inch) from the phone. I love macro photography and can spend hours crawling through the undergrowth looking for things to shoot, so I’m really keen to see how the 13 Pro compares with my usual macro setup. 

But it’s the video skills that have been given possibly the biggest updates here. I’ve shot hours and hours of video with my 12 Pro Max and regularly use it as a vlogging tool for my own photography YouTube channel. The 13 Pro’s wider apertures and bigger telephoto zooms will already go a long way to improving the overall quality of video you can capture, but the new Cinematic Mode could help add an extra pro touch to your filmmaking. 

Cinematic Mode

In Cinematic Mode, the camera will dynamically hold focus on a subject’s face as the subject moves through the scene. If the person gazes away from the camera, the focus will move too — just like how focus would be shifted manually on pro cinema cameras. You can also tap to shift focus and tap twice on a face to lock focus on it. But that focus and depth data isn’t baked into the video clip — you can go back and edit the amount of bokeh and the focus points in your video after you’ve shot it. 

Apple ProRes

I’m also super excited to see that Apple ProRes will come to the 13 Pro later this year. For those of you not familiar, ProRes is a video codec Apple developed that compresses the video file but retains excellent image and color data, allowing for much greater control and quality when it comes to postproduction. It’s frequently used for commercials and feature films, but this’ll be the first time it’s been seen on a mobile device. 

The 13 Pro will be able to shoot in ProRes at 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, and I can’t wait to see what sort of professional cinematic quality it’s possible to achieve in your phone videos. Am I keen to see if I can give my little weekend YouTube channel a major cinematic overhaul? Damn right I am. 

Of course the brighter, faster display will be helpful when shooting in sunny conditions, the 1TB max storage option will be useful for storing all those 4K ProRes videos, and I guess the new A15 bionic processor is the beating heart that’s processing all that fancy new video. 

So no, this isn’t a revolution in photography, and I’m a little disappointed not to see an even bigger zoom lens. But the iPhone 12 Pro Max was already superb for photography, and the 13 Pro takes all the elements that made it great and gives each one a nice upgrade. It probably won’t be worth the upgrade over the 12 Pro Max, but if you’re running an older handset and looking for the ultimate in mobile photography and videography, the iPhone 13 Pro may well be the phone for you.

Apple’s rumored new iPhone 13 might get its big reveal at Apple’s next event on Sept. 14, and as such it’s a good time to postpone any phone buying decisions until we find out what could be in the 2021 iPhone. An ever-increasing number of rumors about the next iPhone seem to come out daily. I put out a few requests to the universe, based on rumors and leaks, for the features and upgrades I want to see in the iPhone 13. I also factor in what the iPhone 13 needs in order to be a success. Consider this my iPhone 13 wish list.

And just to be clear, these are rumors and leaks. Nothing is for certain until Apple announces it. Some of these rumors are from the past few months. Others are several months or even years old and keep rising back to relevance. CNET has plenty more intel on the iPhone 13’s rumored cost, design, cameras, release date and how the iPhone 13 might compare to the iPhone 12.

The iPhone 13 could get a bigger battery

The first rumor is that the iPhone 13 will get a bigger battery. iPhone 12’s battery life is good. In use, both the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro lasted a day without problem. In our battery test with looped video playing in airplane mode, the 12 Pro lasted 15 hours, 56 minutes; the iPhone 12 lasted 17 hours, 14 minutes.

But it’s far from the best battery life we’ve seen. The Samsung Galaxy S21, with its 4,500-mAh battery, lasted 18 hours, 3 minutes in the same test. The Galaxy S21 Ultra and its 5,000-mAh battery lasted 22 hours, 57 minutes. And both of those phones have a high refresh-rate display, which can tax the battery more.

While Apple never reveals the capacity of the batteries inside the iPhone, sites like iFixIt, which sells kits to replace batteries, show that both the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro use a 2,815-mAh battery. What’s impressive is that Apple gets so much life from that small battery purely through the efficiency of its A-series processors and iOS software.

Now imagine applying those efficiencies to a larger physical battery. This is a rumor that I hope is true and I think the next iPhone needs. I mean, who doesn’t want better battery life?

The iPhone 13 might have a high refresh-rate display

Since 2017, the iPad Pro has had a 120Hz refresh rate. Now that panel is an LCD, but rumors point to the iPhone 13 getting a high refresh-rate OLED. For years, many of us longed to see this feature on an iPhone. There are numerous phones at different price points that have a high refresh-rate screen like the $300 OnePlus Nord N10 5G, which has a 90Hz display. The $500 Galaxy A52 5G, the $800 Galaxy S21 and the $1,200 S21 Ultra each have a 120Hz display. In April, Asus launched the ROG Phone 5, which has a 144Hz screen. And in March, the RedMagic 6 phone was announced with a 165Hz screen. For comparison, the iPhone 12 has a 60Hz screen.

Why do you need a high refresh rate? Simply, it makes everything look better. That sweeping generalization aside, animations and graphics look sharper, motion blur is reduced, games (especially those designed for high refresh rate screens) seem more immersive and vivid. Think about how great 120Hz Apple Arcade games could look.

The next iPhone needs a 120Hz screen, at least the “Pro” models do. It would be another “Pro” feature that helps distinguish the higher end iPhone Pro models for the regular and mini version.

There are new rumors that the “Pro” models will get LTPO displays. LTPO stands for low-temperature polycrystalline oxide. Essentially, an LTPO display can change between refresh rates on the fly without the need for extra display hardware. The Galaxy S21 Ultra released in February uses an LTPO display, which Samsung claimed allowed it to be brighter without using more power.

There might not be any ports on the next iPhone

There is a persistent rumor that the iPhone 13 won’t have a Lightning port. Ever since Apple got rid of the headphone jack back in 2016 with the iPhone 7, people speculated that Apple would one day make a completely portless phone. In December, reliable rumor-spreader Ming-Chi Kuo asserted that Apple would release an iPhone in 2021 without a port.

Apple’s launch of MagSafe charging on the iPhone 12 makes it easier to imagine such a port-free future. However, in its current form, MagSafe charging tops out at 15 watts. Compare that with the 20-watt charging you get with a Lightning-to-USB-C cable and wall charger. OnePlus has a wireless charger called the Warp Charge 30 that can charge at 30 watts.

Not only would the next version of MagSafe need to be more powerful to be a reasonable replacement to a physical charging cable, but Apple would also need to solve for some of the data sharing that the Lightning port currently affords. Perhaps Apple is hoping 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0 and its U1 ultrawideband chip are those data-sharing replacements? Or maybe there would be a version of MagSafe with a Lightning port dongle? Who knows?

Apple could build into the next iPhone something like the smart connector found on the current iPad Pro. While the USB-C port on the iPad Pro gets all the attention, on the back of the iPad are three flat metal contacts. When you use the Magic Keyboard accessory with the iPad Pro, it connects to the iPad via the smart connector and magnets. You can plug a USB-C cable into the side of the Magic Keyboard to charge the iPad Pro. Most days during the pandemic, I used the Magic Keyboard to charge my iPad via smart connector.

Maybe there will be “Smart MagSafe” charging on the next iPhone? Even if this rumor is true, removing the last iPhone port isn’t something Apple needs to do right now.

The iPhone 13 could get new cameras

The biggest feature and biggest rumors revolve around the cameras on the iPhone. And there are a bunch of rumors pointing to new lenses, new camera sensors and a wider adoption of sensor-based stabilization across the iPhone line up.

Currently, the iPhone 12 Pro has the same selfie, wide and ultrawide cameras as the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini. The Pro does have a 2x telephoto camera, but it’s not the same as the 2.5x one on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro could get a larger sensor for its wide camera. This rumor doesn’t indicate whether it will be exactly the same as the one on the iPhone 13 Pro Max or not. But the larger sensor could incorporate sensor-based stabilization, which is currently only on the iPhone 12 Pro Max model.

The iPhone 13 Pro is also rumored to get the same or similar telephoto camera as the 13 Pro Max. All that means is that the next regular “Pro” model will be closer to the Pro Max model. Whereas this year, the 12 and 12 Pro are exceedingly similar.

There are a few rumors about a new ultrawide camera either on the iPhone 13, or iPhone 14. (Yes, there are already rumors about the next next iPhone!) The ultrawide camera on the 13 might get better low-light performance and a faster aperture lens. Currently, the lens on the ultrawide is f2.4, but the new lens could be f1.8, which certainly would help toward improving low-light performance.

In terms of camera hardware, the iPhone 13, especially the regular Pro model, could use these rumored upgrades. 

Touch ID could return on the next iPhone

The iPhone 13 could get an under-the-display fingerprint reader. Since the first Android phone came out with an in-screen fingerprint reader, people speculated that an under-the-display Touch ID sensor would be a way to alleviate the frustration some get using Face ID (and this was before the pandemic made face masks an everyday thing).

Currently, Android phones have two types of in-screen fingerprint sensors. There are optical in-screen sensors found on phones like the OnePlus 8T and Motorola Edge Plus. Then there are ultrasonic fingerprint readers by Qualcomm on phones like the Galaxy S21 series.

If the iPhone 13 gets an in-screen fingerprint reader, it’s not clear whether this would replace Face ID or be in addition to it. The rumor also suggests along with a 2019 patent illustration Apple filed that the iPhone could be unlocked with a fingerprint touch anywhere on the screen instead of the single sensor location found currently on Android phones.

If Apple could get ultrasonic sensors to a point of reliability, ease of use and dependability like the old-school Touch ID sensor found on the iPhone SE, it’s not hard to imagine them on an iPhone. And if Touch ID is paired with Face ID, you could have even more ways to secure and access your phone. Having an alternative biometric security measure is something the iPhone needs.

The iPhone 13 might have portrait mode video

The next iPhone could record portrait mode video. You might be familiar with portrait mode, which lets you take a photo and give the picture an artistic, blurry background. The idea is it replicates what a large sensor mirrorless or DSLR camera can do with a fast aperture lens. On the iPhone, portrait mode is limited to photos, but there are several Android phones — like the Samsung Galaxy line, which can record portrait mode video (or live focus video) — that can blur out the background while leaving your subject in focus. In my experience, the results are hit or miss.

It’s exciting to think what Apple could do with portrait mode video and how it handles all the processing needed to separate the foreground and blur the background. The rumor also points to the ability to change the depth of field (the amount of background that is blurred) after a video is already shot. It would be especially cool if it also included Apple’s portrait lighting looks and the ability to edit those after the fact. Though as fun as portrait mode video would be, it’s not something the iPhone needs.

The release of iOS 15 beta includes new FaceTime video call features like portrait mode. I feel like that is basically a confirmation that Portrait Mode video is absolutely possible and I’m hopeful it will be available on the next iPhone.

Astrophotography gets better on the iPhone 13

The last rumor I want to highlight is another camera feature. The iPhone 13 might get a better astrophotography mode. Currently, you can mount the iPhone on a tripod and, in the darkest conditions, extend the night mode capture to up to 30 seconds. Under the right sky and weather, you can capture a decent photo of a starry sky. But when you see what the Google Pixel can do in terms of astrophotography, it leaves a lot to be desired on the iPhone.

If this rumor is true, maybe astrophotography still gets activated in night mode, but you can extend time more than 30 seconds or use computational photography to capture a better night sky or moon? This could be another feature that lives only on “Pro” models the way Apple ProRaw currently does. This is not a needed feature, but it would be a nice one to have.

2021 Bentley Bentayga

Let’s see… a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 engine producing 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Why wouldn’t this be my choice among my favorite luxurious SUVs?

Sure, it costs over $200,000, but I can’t help thinking how fun it would be to slap some aggressive tires on the Bentayga and hit the dunes.

In addition to its superluxurious interior, the Bentayga has eight driving modes, including those for snow, sand, grass and trails. And if the W12 is too much for you, there are also V8 and hybrid models.

2021 Porsche Cayenne

From a 335 hp twin-turbo V6 model to the 670 hp Turbo S E-Hybrid, the Cayenne spans a wide potential performance gamut.

It’s a big SUV, but it still handles like a proper Porsche. Plus, the new PCM infotainment, also seen in the Panamera models, is streets ahead of the older system with increased functionality and ease of use.

2021 Mazda CX-9

You might not think of Mazda as a luxury brand, but I promise, in its top trim levels, the 2019 CX-9 is as nice as many of the other SUVs on this list.

A 2.5-liter turbocharged engine is mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic. It’s like the proverbial butter behind the wheel. But you don’t even have to drive this mid-size SUV to appreciate how well the CX-9 punches above its weight. Just look at it. It’s stunning.

2021 Audi Q7

The three-row Q7 pretty much rocks at everything. It handles like an Audi car should, it looks great, packs in plenty of passengers, and it has all the latest tech. The bonus: it starts with a base price under $55,000.

Two engine choices are offered. The spry little 2.0-liter turbo with 252 horsepower is enough to motivate the Q7 around town, or you can go big and get a twin-turbo V6 with 335 hp.

The Q7 has excellent tech, from active safety to the intuitive MMI infotainment system and now comes with a virtual cockpit standard.

Yes, it’s a ridiculous anachronism, but nothing drives or feels like a Gelandewagen. It’s singularly lovable and memorable, a true living legend that drips both luxury and off-road ability.

The V8-powered G550 offers ample performance, but why not go with the 577-horsepower G63. Sure, it starts at $147,500, but aren’t you worth it?

2021 GMC Yukon Denali

GMC’s big-boy Yukon Denali comes standard with a 6.2-liter V8 making 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, which is mated to an excellent 10-speed automatic transmission. It offers a really smooth and quiet ride for such a big, body-on-frame sport utility vehicle.

Denali-specific exterior touches add a little more styling and look better than the too-flashy Cadillac Escalade.

2021 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

The Velar may start at under $60,000, but that doesn’t mean it’s not chock-a-block with British luxury.

This car is loaded with advanced driver aid systems, including autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep assist. You can also get some cool car tech like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, traffic sign recognition and a drowsy driver monitor.

The interior is a minimalist’s delight, flooded with light from an available panoramic moonroof. Comfortable front seats are heated and cooled and come with massage functionality. And cargo capacity is impressive.

2021 Jaguar I-Pace

Luxury is increasingly about reduction of stress, and silently flying down the road in an electric SUV that requires basically zero maintenance and has comprehensive safety features certainly would make it pretty easy to relax.

Not that any owner is likely to go there, but the all-wheel drive I-Pace is a legitimately good off-road driving vehicle. I tackled some impressively steep terrain on some low-profile, road-biased tires, determining that the I-Pace is the best off-road EV on the market rivaling any Tesla model.

The I-Pace is legitimately quick, with 394 horsepower and a 0-60 time of just 4.5 seconds. Despite that and all-wheel drive, this car will do 240 miles on a charge. It starts at just under $70,000.

There are plenty of things Apple could change about the AirPods Pro to improve them. Extend the battery life. Make the pairing process more seamless on Mac devices. 

But please don’t get rid of the stems.

Apple may give its next-generation AirPods Pro a makeover that eliminates the protruding tips, which would make them more closely resemble Samsung’s Galaxy Buds or the Beats Studio Buds, according to reports from Bloomberg. These new wireless earbuds aren’t expected to show up at Apple’s upcoming Sept. 14 event, but Bloomberg reports they could launch in 2022.

Miniaturizing technology is usually a good thing, and something Apple does historically. Back in 2005, the super thin iPod Nano replaced the chunkier-by-comparison iPod Mini. And the bezel-free iPhone X wowed Apple fans when it debuted in 2017. However, contrary to this downsizing approach, I actually love the AirPods’ stems. Yes, they may have looked goofy back in 2016 before walking around with earpieces was part of the cultural norm. (Not to mention, the original AirPods have significantly longer stems than the AirPods Pro.) 

But in more recent years, they’ve become a statement piece and a status symbol — not something to hide. The stems also offer some helpful benefits that make the AirPods Pro more comfortable and easier to use than rounder-shaped earbuds. 

So please, Apple, don’t change the look and feel of AirPods too much.

The stems give AirPods a signature look that makes them stand out

AirPods have an unmistakable appearance, and that’s mostly because of their stems. If you see someone wearing a pair of glossy white earbuds with long tips, you know they’re wearing AirPods. 

Although the stems on the AirPods Pro are noticeably shorter than those of the standard AirPods, they’re still long enough to visibly distinguish Apple’s wireless earbuds from the rest. I can’t think of another pair of wireless earbuds that’s immediately identifiable in the same way as AirPods.

That wouldn’t matter so much if AirPods hadn’t become such a status symbol. The pronounced stems on the original AirPods invited mockery at first, and even the AirPods Pro got their fair share of ridicule when they were announced in 2019. 

But the public perception of AirPods shifted sometime during that time frame. AirPods soon became a signal of wealth and affluence, much like the iPhone. A viral tweet from late 2018 joked that AirPods owners are the richest people in the world, even more so than the CEO of Amazon and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates.

During the lockdown era of 2020, AirPods were all over television as producers had to film remotely, as iMore pointed out. Part of the reason why AirPods gained this level of attention in the first place was because they were so recognizable. I wonder if removing the stems also means removing that unique distinction. 

Yes, there are other wireless earbuds with long tips, such as the Anker Liberty Air 2 Pro. The difference, though, is that Apple pioneered the long-stemmed look, meaning that design is still generally associated with AirPods. Many of Apple’s competitors have already released stem-free wireless earbuds.

The next-generation AirPods 3, which may launch this year, are expected to maintain their tips. But it’s unclear whether that will remain true for future models. Reports from Bloomberg and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicate that the next version of the standard AirPods will look more like the current AirPods Pro. If accurate, it’s plausible to think that Apple’s design decisions for the AirPods Pro 2 could trickle down to future models of the standard AirPods. 

The AirPods Pro’s stems are actually useful

I’ll say it again — I really like the AirPods’ stems, mostly because I find them practical. For one, they make it easier to insert and remove the earbuds since they provide more space to actually grip the earpiece. It doesn’t feel like I’m screwing a peg or pushing a button into my ear whenever I put in the AirPods or AirPods Pro.

More importantly, the AirPods Pros’ stems are a much better location for touch controls than the earpiece itself. On the AirPods Pro, you can press the sensor located on the earbud’s stem to play or pause music. A double press on the stem lets you skip forward, while a triple press skips backward.

That’s not the case for other wireless earbuds from Samsung, Sony, Bose and Amazon among others. These headphones have touch sensors or buttons located on the actual earbuds for controlling music playback or toggling active noise cancellation. 

That means you have to tap or press the earbud to activate these controls via touch gestures, which can feel uncomfortable and create more pressure on your ear. I’m sure there are plenty of people who prefer this and would rather have earbuds that look more discreet (or sound better) than the AirPods or AirPods Pro. But I’m not one of those people.

Plus, I often trigger the touch controls found on these other earbuds by accident since I usually have to push them back into my ear during a workout.

Apple also already has a best-in-class design with the current AirPods Pro. I’ve tested earbuds from Samsung, Amazon, Sony, Beats and Anker over the years, and I still find Apple’s earbuds to provide the most comfortable and secure fit. 

My colleague David Carnoy even pointed to the AirPods Pro’s winning design as one of the key reasons AirPods Pro rank among our favorite wireless earbuds, even if their sound isn’t as good as some rivals. 

It’s unreasonable to expect that AirPods would look the same forever. That’s just not how technology progresses. If Apple does remove the stems from the next AirPods Pro, many will see it as an engineering feat since it would mean squeezing more technology into a tighter package. Much like how the removal of the headphone jack starting with the iPhone 7 seemed to lead to better cameras and other improvements in the years to follow.

Of course, we won’t know for sure until Apple announces the second-generation AirPods Pro, if and when that happens. But if they do get a new look, I just hope Apple finds a way to continue making them feel distinctly like AirPods. 

Apple has a history of coming up with different input methods for new types of wireless devices, such as the Apple Watch’s digital crown. Maybe whatever Apple comes up with next will be even better, and I won’t miss the stems at all.

The iPhone 13 is expected to be the main attraction at Apple’s virtual event on Sept. 14, but there’s a chance we might also see the the AirPods 3 debut. Rumors and reports suggest that a refreshed version of the standard AirPods (yes, the ones with the long stems) could launch in 2021, and Apple’s annual product launch event seems like the ideal time to do it.

If the rumors prove true, the new AirPods will be a lot more like the high-end AirPods Pro. Likely to be called the AirPods 3, Apple’s next true wireless earbuds could feature a new design with shorter stems, interchangeable ear tips, a new Apple chip and a smaller charging case.

That could make deciding between the standard AirPods and AirPods Pro all the more difficult.  There’s no way to truly know what to expect from the AirPods 3 until Apple unveils them. And we also don’t know whether they’ll be priced the same as the current entry-level AirPods. But here’s a look at how they could compare to the AirPods Pro based on the reports, leaks, and rumors so far.
